Q+A with Ken McLaren of AcmeBarGig

Q: Can you give us a brief insight on who you are?

My name is Ken McLaren and I have been in software development for about 20 years in a wide range of faiths. I have been playing guitar for 28 years.

Q: Tell us something about the history of your company and what was your first plugin?

Well to properly answer I have to give you a bit of extra background, hope you don’t mind.

I took a job as a truck driver because I was absolutely tired of working in software development and just wanted to retire from it. So, my wife and I bought a truck, sold most of our stuff and toured North America living in the truck for 4 years. Our truck was done up like an RV with flat screen TV, fridge, small stove, etc.

After 4 years we decided that it was time to do something else we wanted to do.

We initially decided that we were going to open a recording studio and small record label. But when it came time to buy the software, I found it was insanely expensive. I thought, “I’m gonna write my own.” So I did, and AcmeBarGig (ABG) was re-born.

LePou and I both started at the same time on almost the same thread at guitarampmodeling.com. This is the home of both of our first plugs (I think). Mine was a terrible 12AX7 emulator. It can still be downloaded and the thread read.

It also shows the progression from the original 12AX7 Plug into what would become DIG (Dual Integrated Gain). I believe all versions of DIG are still available there.

Q: What excites you about amp-sim plugin at the moment?

It seems to me that the big guys are just spurning out the same stuff they always have and charging the same prices they always have. That’s OK and completely understandable given that they have to cater specifically to the public with very little chance for innovation. So, if anything its the newer generation of freeware developers that seems to be popping up and in some cases performing the innovation.

The new Aradaz team are exciting, (Kuehnel I think they are called –edit: Kuassa). Of course I am looking forward to LePou’s new shift to original creations.

And although not freeware, Nebula’s technology has always been exciting. I think once some of these new guys cut their teeth a little more and have a few more releases, we’ll start seeing them deliver new and original creations.

At that point the sim world will start to come into its own. Instead of just being the imitator of amp sounds, it will also become the creator of amp sounds. I mean there is only one place to get a true Marshall Sound, thats with a Marshall, but there is only one place to get a true ABG Dick Head sound too, and that is using ABG Dick Head.

Q: Do you believe that plugins will replace guitar amplifiers?

Not entirely, you will always need something to amplify the signal. Having said that, I do believe one day that there will be no more tubes (probably not in our lifetime). At that time who knows how it will go, but I do believe that modeling will be used. So, in short yes (sort of).

It will probably be similar to a laptop plugged into a power-amp and cabinet. I believe that the head sound is more important than the cab sound in this regard because people will be using their own cabinet and as such will not need cabinet simulation.

Currently most of the tone of the head is shaped largely due to the impulse response used. To a certain degree, some modelers are relying on the cabinet sound to get their overall tone.

I believe that is the false way to look at it in terms of future usage, like in the above mentioned scenario. The head has to sound great without the cabinet. Then no matter what real cabinet you plug it into, it will still sound great.

Q: What’s been your proudest plugin you’ve produced so far?

I have not produced it yet.

Q: What’s your future plans or recent projects you’ve been working on?

Oh jeez, got an hour?

  • Development: The VST compiler, and the Mish Mash development environment.
  • Guitars: G-SPOT, Osmosis, Shred 2.0, DIG 3.0, Preampus Suite, Aftershock II, Redshift Chameleon (aka Redshift 2), Cab Enhancer 2.0 with Cab Lab, and Reaction Cabs.
  • Bass: B-SPOT, Bigger (upgrade to BIG), Redshift for Bass.
  • Vocals: Snegus, Albedo Delay.
  • Effects: Wonder Girdle, GhettoBASS, AMBIENT.
  • Synths: Means to Ambience.
  • Mastering: Goto (co-development with exe), Minion

We have I think about 37 developments in varying degrees of completeness and stages. So, very soon we’ll turn up the heat and do a serious amount of releases.

Q: Let’s imagine that you’ve won the “Best Virtual Amplifier” award. Who would you dedicate it to?

All the commercial development companies. If it weren’t for them and their prices, I would not be developing these things. I’d be recording local bands and trying to sell records :)

Which by the way, is still in the cards for AcmeBarGig. Its about the musicians who create music. So, we want to get more actively involved in their promotions and distribution.

Q: What are the difficulties of making your own amp-sims? And how would you make it better than others?

The limitations imposed by any number of things: CPU usage, development language, level of knowledge (I am always learning), time constraints, the list goes on and on. So, the single biggest problem I encounter is limitations.

Make it better? Well, truth be told, I don’t truly believe anyone amp-sim is better than the other, they ALL have their uses at times.

Take for example Whisper Tube. One would think that a Metalhead would not use that amp-sim, well in fact they do for clean passages.

So, all amp-sims have their uses. As far as making the limitations better. That boils down to the design phase. Take the time to design and the development will go smoother.

Q: What are your opinions on free plugins, copyright protection, and people cracking software and distributing on the internet?

Freeware Developers

Free plugins are extremely important to the future of modeling. This is because freeware developers are not limited by what the public dictates. The large companies have to develop to satisfy a bottom line. If the public wants yet another Plexi emulation, then that’s what they create, another Plexi creation.

However, in terms of what we do, I have no one above me saying that we have to create a Plexi plugin, so I am free to create what I want. What is created may be good, it may be bad, who knows? But, it is something different, usually. Its this freedom to create that freeware developers have that makes them so important.

Take for example Run Beer Run. He has one of the most creative amp modeling minds on the earth, yet some would say his creations are not commercially viable. Maybe not yet, but one day who knows where he could go with his creations? Perhaps something he creates inspires an idea from someone else, who inspires another idea and all of a sudden we have a brand new technology that never existed before. Without the initial original thinking of RBR we would not have the new creation.

Copyright Protection

Trying to protect your software is a huge waste of time. We will not be putting any protections in ours at all whatsoever. I don’t believe we are in a “retail” type environment any longer. At one time you went to a cash register, paid for your software and went home. Its not like that anymore.

You release your software with all the locks and passwords, dongles, etc. You spend 6 months trying to do all that and in 2 days after release its been cracked and downloaded freely.

First, to think that YOU are going to create an unbreakable protection scheme is arrogant. That implies that you think no one is better than you at development. Well, after 20 years, I can tell you first hand there is always someone better. And if you’re smart, you’ll learn from them.

It further implies that you think your customers are thieves. What the hell kinda way to treat a customer is that?

Customer: “Can I have a burger and fries please…”

Waiter: “Yes sir coming right up, but, I need the cash up front, you have to give me your cell phone, and you can only eat it in that locked booth over there. We have to make sure that you don’t share your burger with anyone!”

So, no I will not treat our customers like that.

People now buy software because they believe in the company. You can completely record without spending a penny on amp simulators. LePou, Nick, us (ABG), we have all seen to that.

So, when people buy ABG products, its because they like the company. The products are somewhat secondary. I mean they have to sound good and be usable, but truth be told, anyone amp-sim is no better than the other. One may have more features, one may be more suited to a particular style, but really they are all the same at some level.

So, my belief for success is quite simple:

  1. Be out there meeting your users and LISTEN TO THEM.
  2. Support them as best you can.
  3. Create the best product you can.
  4. Give them a truly reasonable price.

Cracking and Distribution

There is Zero to be done about this.

Companies need to change the way they are perceived, the prices they charge and the amount of support they deliver. The value is no longer just in how good the software is. Its in someone’s personal attachment to a company.

I have a true life story about this and it corresponds to this in a weird sort of way.

My father worked for The Globe and Mail newspaper the 70′s. His job was to sell newspapers from the newspaper boxes. At this time the paper boxes were 100% honor based, so the reader could simply take the paper without paying. There was a little coin slot in the box that you were supposed to put a quarter in.

Needless to say, the theft rate on these types of boxes was staggering, shockingly close to what it is in terms of pirated software.

My Father’s answer to this was not to lock the boxes, I mean that was not even invented yet. Instead he got to know his customers, gave them free papers once a month as a thank you. Made sure the boxes were always well stocked and clean. The result was he had one of the lowest theft rates of any newspaper man in the country.

Obviously now the theft rates are extremely low as a result of protection that’s placed on newspaper boxes, but in software, we don’t have that same luxury. There is no 100% protection schemes available. So, I have adopted my Fathers strategy.

Get to know my customers, make sure the software is well presented, give away good freebies, and make sure the prices don’t hurt anyone. Hopefully people will respond to us in the same way they did to my father.

He still had theft, but, many of the people that used to steal from him stopped.

If someone really can’t afford to buy one of our titles, they can always drop me an email. 99.9% of the time I’ll make sure they get a copy. Although they may have to record us a tune!

Q: What advice would you offer for beginners considering a career as a VST developer?

Do almost everything opposite to the way I am doing it. Like, don’t be a dumbass and start a company in the middle of a world wide recession. Get ready to eat a lot of stew. Stew stretches your food budget. Most important, understand that you are a dumbass for doing it in the first place. I have finally understood the last one :)

Q: What other interests have you got outside of the VST world?

Both my wife and I are very serious in the kitchen.

I love my dog Tex whom we found on our travels. He was a little 14 week old pup running in the desert near Amarillo, Texas. The vet only gave him a few more days to live after we got him. He was covered in so many ticks that it looked like growths, lethargic, and had no energy.

When he got cleaned up, he turned into a wild dog and started attacking us in the truck! After about a week, we could speak to him without him attacking, and in 2 weeks we could somewhat pet him.

Now he is an absolutely 100% obedient attack dog. I can say the kill command word (hand sign or even sound), and without question he obeys. Say the break word and he stops instantly.

This was good for us because we were in a truck and as such had to sleep in some pretty dangerous places. Like the guy who tried to stab me in Florida, Tex mangled his arm, and he never even saw him. Crazy world we all live in!

Q: What are your top five hardwares or plugins?

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall, SRD XP-100, Marshall.

VERSI BAHASA INDONESIA

Q: Ceritakan sekilas tentang diri anda?

  • Development: The VST compiler, and the Mish Mash development environment.
  • Guitars: G-SPOT, Osmosis, Shred 2.0, DIG 3.0, Preampus Suite, Aftershock II, Redshift Chameleon (aka Redshift 2), Cab Enhancer 2.0 with Cab Lab, and Reaction Cabs.
  • Bass: B-SPOT, Bigger (upgrade to BIG), Redshift for Bass.
  • Vocals: Snegus, Albedo Delay.
  • Effects: Wonder Girdle, GhettoBASS, AMBIENT.
  • Synths: Means to Ambience.
  • Mastering: Goto (co-development with exe), Minion

Q: Bayangkan anda memenangkan penghargaan “Ampli Virtual Terbaik”. Kepada siapa akan anda berikan dedikasi?

Seluruh perusahaan pengembang software komersil.

Contohnya seperti Whisper Tube.

Semua amp-sim mempunyai kegunaan masing-masing.

Seperti contohnya Run Beer Run.

Ayah saya bekerja pada koran The Globe and Mail di tahun ’70-an.

Saya sendiri baru menyadarinya :)

Q: Minat diluar dunia VST?

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall, SRD XP-100, Mashall.

        Hati Nurani?
Gak tau, mungkin memang sekedar apresiasi?
        :D

OOT: gw suka ma post lu yang Free Drawing Tools, inspiratif!!!
        Thanks

        best regards

        • Good for you.

Misalnya seperti produk Synth1, Elektrostudio, LePou, Aradaz, etc. Tapi promosi mereka memang tidak segencar payware. You just have to know where to ‘look’.

Great interview and interviewer. Ken is in the same boat as Justin Frankel from REAPER’s fame: Trust your customers, respect your customers and they will do the same.

So far so good for REAPER (full DAW at 60$), Jamstix (Virtual drummer at 99$) Wusik (full synth at 65$ during a group-buy) and our ABG stuff that we can’t sadly buy at the moment but will gladly do for Shred 2.0.

I gladly paid for all those products. They all provide great support and companies behind them are ethical. No dongle crap. There’s a VST plugin I really want but won’t buy since it’s iLock protected. Such a company doesn’t deserve my support so I pass.

Ken clearly understood the psychology behind musicians’ brain. :)

    • Glad you mentioned Justin Frankel. I do admire his method too. Also others like Stillwell and Schwa. I hope more and more developers would follow that.

FYI, the reason I asked Ken about it, because piracy is still a devastating issue in Indonesia. I also believe there are a lot of good Indonesian programmers, but maybe they’re too ‘afraid’ of selling their own products.. or even distributing it for free. I hope they would create something wicked without the fear of piracy.

So long as companies make it hurt to buy software, people will still opt to steal it. To some degree, there will always be those that would steal even if the prices were below the pain threshold. There is really nothing to be done about that.

I calculate our prices in terms of beer. So, Whats it cost for one good night out with as much beer as you want to drink? As long as our price does not go above that for most countries in the world, then we’re below the pain threshold. In Canada, 25 dollars US is way below what it costs for a night out, more like 150 dollars. But in Brazil? Indonesia, Cuba, etc…I think you could probably have a decent night out on 25 dollars. So…in a sense the buyer is loosing a hangover, and gaining some software! Win Win..:)

I love his point of view. I have been ask too in amp development, unluckily i dont have enough time to do that.
Go to my web and have look my vst.
    Buatan Indonesia LoL

Now i discontinue build vst at the moment and learning process to build DAW (digital audio workstation)

    TQ,RP!

    • Wow. DAW. That’s cool!

You gotta have lots of time to build it though. But if that is your passion, then just go for it, man. Who knows maybe it will be the first DAW from Indonesia.

Good luck and thanks for visiting.

Yeah hopefully, i want to build something simple and really affordable. Hopefully become The Bridge for people in making music. The bridge from pirate soft user become affordable original software user. My reference is Presonus CAPTURE (very simple!)

I knew it takes time and i have business in studio also. So i need at least 2 hour / day to accomplish the DAW around a year.

    Hopefully, not promise!
